Behind The Scenes with the Honorees: Ewenique Wilson

Ewenique Wilson, affectionately known as Kai, journeyed through trials and triumphs, shaping her path from the FISP (Fundamental of Industrial Sewing and Production) program at ISAIC (Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center) to entrepreneurship. Her story is one of resilience, personal growth, and a commitment to making a mark in the world of fashion.

In Kai's own words, "I go by my business, Uniquely Sophisticated, which comes from my name of ascension, Ewenique Kai Ondai. It's a blend of my Earth baby identity and cultural practices." Her spiritual journey and understanding of self-led her to embrace her ancestral name, embodying a unique fusion of identity.

The road to ISAIC began with industrial sewing at a mutual aid facility. A field trip to ISAIC revealed a world of possibilities, and Kai felt chosen, a sentiment echoed by her peers. The excitement of joining ISAIC’s Fundamentals of Industrial Sewing and Production (FISP) program unfolded within weeks, marking the start of her transformative journey.

Initially drawn to share her sewing knowledge with her little sister, Kai discovered a deeper connection at ISAIC, realizing she could pursue her own fashion endeavors, whether it was creating a clothing line for her business or making clothes for her family. Her business, Uniquely Sophisticated LLC, incorporates jewelry, metaphysical tools, lactation services, and spiritual consulting, each reflecting Kai's multifaceted creativity.

The learnings from ISAIC became invaluable for Kai's entrepreneurial aspirations. The program instilled not only technical sewing skills but also vital life skills. "Everything from networking to time management, I learned to see the positive in my work," she emphasizes. ISAIC provided a professional edge, preparing students for the broader aspects of the fashion industry.

Kai's advice for FISP program improvement involves adding a continuation class or part two, allowing returning students to deepen their skills. This suggestion aligns with ISAIC's ongoing efforts to offer shorter training options, ensuring a comprehensive skill set for future students.

As a mother without a car, Kai faced significant challenges managing her schedule during the eight-week program. Her commitment to her daughter and the belief that ISAIC would open doors for a better life fueled her determination. Kai's daughter's excitement for her creations “made the sacrifices worthwhile,” reinforcing the significance of her journey.

Looking ahead, Kai envisions a future where ISAIC continues to empower individuals to be more self-sufficient, transforming the fashion industry in Detroit and beyond. Her three-word description of ISAIC—efficient, supportive, and advanced—captures the essence of the program that played a pivotal role in her journey.

Ewenique Wilson's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing challenges, finding one's unique voice, and turning aspirations into reality. Through ISAIC, Kai discovered not just technical skills but a profound sense of self and a community that nurtured her dreams.

We are honored to present her with the Alumni of the Year award at the inaugural ISAIC Honors event on May 2nd at the Madison in Downtown Detroit. I hope you are able to join us May 2nd at The Inaugural ISAIC Honors, to celebrate Kai.
